Accused in high-profile murder case arrested at Torkham

LANDIKOTAL: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) at Torkham border has arrested the prime accused in the murder case of a known lawyer, official sources said on Sunday.
An official told The News on the condition of anonymity that they had received information that Arshad Mahmood, resident of F-10 Islamabad, would try to flee Afghanistan via Torkham border. He said that on August 15, Arshad had allegedly killed Barrister Fahad Mehmood, a nephew of former Senate chairman Muhammad Mian Soomro.
The official said the bereaved family had nominated Arshad in the murder case. When contacted, Political Agent Khalid Mehmood said name of the alleged killer was already on the exit control list (ECL).
Khalid said the accused was on way to Afghanistan and reached Torkham border at around 8pm Saturday night. He said that after preliminary verification in ECL, they arrested him and recovered computerized national identity card and passport from his possession. He said the accused wanted to flee to the US via Afghanistan as a valid United States visa had been stamped on his passport. The arrestee was later shifted to an undisclosed location for investigation.
Meanwhile, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan announced Rs0.1 million cash prize for the FIA staff posted at Torkham border for their timely action
