Pakistan gifted 40,000 ton wheat to Afghanistan

LANDIKOTAL: The first cape of 280 ton wheat gifted by Pakistan was handed over to Afghan authorities at Torkham border on Saturday.

Pakistani citizens donated the wheat on the call of former Prime Minster Shahid Khaqan Abbasi was transported in four trucks and reached Torkham border. A colorful handing over ceremony was held on the Pak-Afghan border which was attended by a large number of Pakistani and Afghan officials. Hunderds of citizens of both the countries were also present on the occasion.

National Logistic Cell general manager Mazhar Iqbal led the Pakistani side while Afghanistan agriculture ministry official Ghulam Farooq led the Afghan delegation.

Talking to The News NLC official Mazhar Iqbal said that Pakistan Muslim League former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi had promised the Afghan government that Pakistan would gift 40,000 ton wheat as goodwill gesture. He said the total price of the wheat in open market was 04 billion rupees. He added that in the first cape they handed over 280 tons wheat to Afghanistan. He said they would give 40,000 ton wheat to Afghanistan in few months.

Afghan official Ghulam Farooq thanked Pakistan and its citizens for helping Afghan people in such crises time. He said they would distribute the wheat in deserving people in Afghanistan. “We not only appreciate Pakistan for such humanitarian gift but it would also reduce the rift between the two countries”, said Farooq. He said they hope that Pakistan would keep continue its cooperate and coordination with the Afghanistan government.
