Fata parliamentarians opposed LB system in tribal areas

PESHAWAR: The tribal parliamentarians belonging from Fata region has announced to oppose the proposed local bodies system for Fata, likely to be announced tomorrow (Tuesday) by the federal government.

Former federal minister and parliamentary leader of the Fata lawmakers, Hameedullah Jan Afridi vowed to oppose the system as proposed by the concerned officials. “The government had promised with us to establish an elected autonomous council for the area but now the LB system is being thrust upon us,” Afridi said. “The proposed LB system has provided authority to the governor of the province to nominate chairman and deputy chairman of the local bodies and he would be competent to remove any elected office holder,” he said.
Talking to The News, Afridi said one out of three members of the parliament of Kurram Agency, who doesn’t represent people of FATA and 20 members of the parliament, has no right to become champion of the rights of Fata people by supporting the flawed system about which no due discussion and brainstorming has been undertaken.
He revealed that one afternoon the members of parliament were invited for iftar-dinner by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa governor and they were given a working paper about the LB system for Fata and they were asked to offer their views about it before 5:00pm.
The members were fasting and declined to submit their input on the short notice. He said the working paper doesn’t elaborate as to who would be responsible for law and order, revenue authority and how the political authority would be exercised.
