LANDIKOTAL: Twenty-seven persons, including women and children, were killed while three other were recovered alive from flood water when a pickup van washed away by flash floods water in Sra Shaga area of Bazar Zkhakhel in Landikotal Tehsil of Khyber Agency, officials said on Saturday.
Political Agent of Khyber Agency told The News that a pickup truck (8318) packed with wedding party of a family members was on their way to Bara from Bazar Zakhkhel. He said when they reached to Sra Shaga area in Bazar Zakhakhel all of a sudden a wave of flash flood came and hit the vehicle.
A resident, who wished not to be named, disclosed that the driver of the pickup left the vehicle at the mercy of Allah at the road and ran away when he saw a big wave of flash flood proceeding toward them.He said those in the pickup had found no time to jump up from the vehicle and take a safe side.
“All the 29 persons in the van washed away by flood water when the huge wave of flash flood hit the vehicle”, said Khalid Mehmood, adding that local residents after hectic rescue work recovered 26 dead bodies from the nearby localities while three of them had been rescued alive. He said those dead wee including of 18 children, six women and two men while three other injured persons were recovered alive, said the official.
The injured persons were also stated to be in a stable health condition who were discharged after getting first aid medical treatment in a nearby hospital, the sources added.
Political Agent of Khyber Agency, Khalid Mehmood, assistant political agent of Landikotal Rahimullah Mehsud and political tehsildar Landikotal Irshad Ali Mohmand reached the incident site when they heard about the incident. They also met with the family members of the bereaved persons and condoled the tragic deaths of their beloved ones.
A resident in Bazar Zakhakhel told this scribe by phone that women along with their minor children and teen age girls were going to participate in a wedding party in Sra Shaga area of Bazar Zakha Khel when they met the incident.
The funeral prayers of the ill-fated persons were offered in bazar Zakhakhel amid heart breaking scenes at the burial times.
Political Agent Khalid Mehmood announced rupees 0.3 million for dead while rupees 0.1 million for injured persons.
The official vowed that they would also request the governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Iqbal Zafar Jhagra to visit bazar Zakhakhel and meet the families.
Those killed were identified as Saeeda Bibi,Hazrat Meena,Maryam,Nazmeena,Yamin,Falaja,Mawala,Haleema Bibi,Sidra Bibi,Sbeela,Rahimullah,Tasreena,Fatima Bibi,Muhammad Khan,Khial Muhammad,Basri Bibi,Shahjy Bibi,Shaleena,Yaqoob,Abida,Watankhela,Wahida Bibi,Gul Wali,Laiba Khadija,Basaleha and Rajmeena Bibi.
