Smuggling via Pak-Afghan border is a security risk: Officials




TORKHAM: Officials at Torkham border on Monday said that smuggling of different goods from and to Afghanistan was not a billion of rupees blow to the national exchaqure everyday but it provides a channel to anti Pakistani elements to help shift weapons and other contraband items for terror bids in Pakistan.

The official, who request anonimity, said that million of ruppees goods daily smuggled on Torkham gate,Bacha Mena and other ghosts routs along the Pak-Afghan border in Landikotal.

He alleged that Torkham border and other ghosts routs ont only provide an easy path to smuggle daily commodities but terrorists and other anti-Pakistani elements have an easy approach to shift weapons and Indian and Israeli agents through these routs to spread terrorism in Pakistan.

He said Frontier Crops (FC) last month had displaced 64 million ruppees and gold armaments seized at Torkham border. The security forces officials had claimed to have also arrested eight terrorists,money and gold being used for terrorism activities in Pakistan.

On the other hand,sources said that around twenty goods smugglers both from Pakistan and Afghanistan were busy in smuggling of non custom paid items across the border.They said the smugglers pay a handsome amount to the Landikotal and Torkham officials.
A goods smuggler at Torkham border,who wished not to be named, told The News that they daily pay rupees 50,000 to one lace for each loaded pushcart to the Landikotal and Torkham administration officials.
He said they were around twenty main agents who takes million of rupees different goods across the border without pay tax to both the Afghan and Pakistani governments.
He said each goods' smuggler have their sub-agents and working children who help cross the goods crossed the border.He said around three hundreds children including girls were being used as smuggling tools.
 An other official at Torkham said that smugglers during the last two months broken the past record.He said smuggling of  foreign goods had became an ordinry business of the day.

The official said they keep a vigilant eye on the border line as Indian an Israeli agents in Afghanistan want to use the ghost routs to enter into Pakistan.

He said unfolded smuggling was causing billion of ruppees blow to the state economy every day.

The border official said loaded handcarts and pushcarts cross the border while pay forty and seventy thousands per consignment to Khasadar personnel. He said many times they recovered narcotics, weapons and other contraband items from the lugguges.

"It is not smuggling of non custom paid goods but Khasadars allow loaded handcarts and pushcarts without the security chcking at enrty points is a big security risk for the security forces", said the official.

Data collected in Torkham border town more than three thousands loaded and empty trucks, around two thousands loaded wheelbarrows and other handcarts were daily crossing Torkham border.

The items being smuggled from and to Afghanistan were included of Indian medicines,used elctronics home appliances,cloth,auto tyres,  cosmetics,vehicles spare parts,cooking oil,soap,juices,suger, crockery,beverages,flour and other food items.

The smugglled commodities later melt in the different markets in Pakistan, the source maintained.

When contacted Khyber Agency's political agent Sayed Shahab Ali Shah said he had taken strict actions and have stopped all kinds movements via Torkham border. He said the  Khasadars and clerical staff have been transferred who were allegedly involved in corruption.
The official said registration of Afghan nationals was a step which could also help reduce illegal movement across the border.

This correspondent several times tried to take APA Landikotal Nasir Khan's version but to no avail.
